除了由「關係代名詞」引導關係子句修飾人、事、物以外，另外有由「關係副詞」所引導的關係子句來修飾表時間、地點⋯等的先行詞。
where：先行詞是「地方」，如：
This is the small town where I grew up.（這是我成長的小鎮。）
when：先行詞是「時間」，如：
Christmas is the holiday when everybody gets presents.（聖誕節是每個人收到禮物的節日。）
why：先行詞是「原因」，如：
Can you tell me the reason why you are late? （你可以告訴我你遲到的原因嗎？）
how：先行詞是「方法」，如：
Do you know the way how Mr. Wang became so successful?（你知道王先生變得如：此成功的方法嗎？）
what 也有類似的作用，稱為「複合關代」，它本身即代表先行詞＋關代：
what = the thing(s) ＋ which / that，如：
I don’t understand what (= the thing which) Mr. Wu said in class today.
（我不懂吳老師今天在課堂上說的話。）
